Why some clinics make up their own names for hair transplants

In the hair transplant industry, it has become increasingly common for some clinics, especially abroad (particularly in Turkey), to market their treatments under unique and sophisticated-sounding names such as “ICE Sapphire FUE,” “Micro DHI Ultra,” or “Laser Percutaneous FUE.” These names may sound appealing and lead patients to believe they are being offered a completely new and groundbreaking method that no other clinic has access to. But the truth is different. In most cases, it is purely marketing – the methods are essentially standard FUE or DHI.

Before diving into the myths surrounding these names, it’s important to understand what the established methods FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) actually involve.

• FUE involves using a microscopic tool to extract individual hair follicles from the donor area and then implanting them into the area where hair is intended to grow.
• DHI is a variation of FUE, where the implantation is done directly using a Choi pen, making the process more precise but also more time-consuming.

Several foreign-based clinics, particularly in Turkey, choose to rename the methods they use with more sophisticated-sounding titles in order to:

1. Stand out in a competitive market
2. Make the treatment appear unique or technologically superior
3. Charge a higher price for what is essentially a standard method

Patients who are not familiar with what FUE or DHI actually involve can easily be misled into thinking they are receiving something exclusive, when in reality it’s the exact same procedure performed at other clinics – just under a different name.

These names are rarely linked to actual technical innovation or any kind of medical improvement. Instead, they are used to create an illusion of exclusivity.

✅ Always ask exactly what the method involves. If a clinic offers a procedure with an unusual name, ask them to explain which technique it is fundamentally based on.

✅ Always compare with established methods. Find out whether it is, in practice, standard FUE or DHI.

✅ Be critical of “technical” names. Just because something sounds advanced doesn’t mean it’s better.

✅ Do your research. Learn about FUE and DHI so you can ask the right questions.
